Gertrude Graham Smith, aka Gay, is a studio potter and teaching artistsingle firing porcelain ware in a soda kiln near Penland, NC. She heldartist-in-residencies at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montanaand at Penland School in Penland, NC. Her teaching credits includeworkshops at Penland School, Haystack School, Harvard University, andthe Findhorn Foundation in Scotland. Her work is representedinternationally, is in collections including the Mint Museum in Charlotte,NC, and the Yingge Ceramics Museum in Taiwan. She’s been featured onthe cover of Ceramics Monthly magazine, and her work can be viewed innumerous publications such as M a king Marks and F u nctional Potter y byRobin Hopper, and W o rking with Clay by Susan Peterson. Grant awardsinclude a North Carolina Arts Council Visual Artist Fellowship award and aRegional Artist Project Grant. She’s a past board member of the NorthCarolina Pottery Center, and currently serves on the board at PenlandSchool of Crafts in Penland, NC.
