Viewing Room: Karen Neems, Spatial Choreography

February 28 through April 8, 2016
Opening Reception: Sunday, February 28, 2-4pm

In the Balance Act III, Photocollage and mixed media, 24" x 24"

In her newest body of work, Karen Neems takes static, mundane objects and photographs them from the perspective of looking down. She layers images, adding additional translucent film, which further enhances the illusion of space. "Circles represent the eternal whole and in every culture are an archetypical form representing the sun, the earth, the moon, and the universe," says Neems, who sees the irony of elevating these ordinary objects into the realm of celestial bodies. The elements of her work have a certain familiarity, but the composition transcends the importance of their identification.

Karen Neems is a member of the Silvermine Guild of Artists and a resident of Stamford. She has had solo exhibitions at the Mamaroneck Artists Guild, the Mayor's Gallery in Stamford, the Westport Arts Center, and at the Treetops Chamber Music Society. She recently won Best in Show at the 2016 Photography exhibit at the Carriage Barn Arts Center in New Canaan.
