Artist Statement
I feel that I have been an artist all of my life. Expressing myself visually started at a very young age. Going to Art School was the only direction I wanted to take my education and I was lucky to have a mix of classical art education, fine art education mixed with graphic design. It was from here that my ‘day jobs’ have always encompassed the arts in some form. For ten years I worked in Package design, Print Design, Advertising and then I decided that I needed to turn to my own art studio to create and since 1990 have pursued my life long career as a ceramic artist and a teaching artist. Perhaps because I have lived mostly in urban settings, my creative thinking often turns to nature and organic forms. I love the tactile experience and the symmetry of hand-throwing ceramic forms on the wheel, and the asymmetrical focus of adding small pieces of sculpture to the vessels-mostly lizards, amphibians and ocean creatures. My background in graphics shows through in each piece of ceramics with my love of patterns, bright colors, and use of composition.
