COME JOIN US FOR A TWO-DAY WORKSHOP OF ART & INSPIRATION
Sunday, October 6, 4:30pm - 6:00pm Artist's talk
Monday, October 7, 9:30am - 4:00pm Workshop Day 1
Tuesday, October 8, 9:30am - 4:00pm Workshop Day 2
“If you hear a voice within you say, ‘you cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.” - Vincent Van Gogh
If these words speak to you and wake up a desire to paint, then join Jill for a workshop where the creative process will be taught in such a way that painting becomes the expression of your soul in nature. The workshop will begin with a talk entitled "Van Gogh Seen through the Artist's Eyes". The focus of the workshop will be on color: how to mix a harmonious palette in oil paint, then put it to use in the landscape or still life and/or interiors if weather does not permit. Experience the true creative process of taking in nature through the senses to activate one's unique inner poetry. Jill’s workshop is more about climbing to a higher level, stretching oneself to experience the link with nature in a deeper way than just copying nature superficially.
Jill Steenhuis, an Atlanta native, has lived in Aix-en-Provence, France, since 1980, painting in the landscapes of Provence. After graduating from Sweet Briar College with a BFA in studio art, she attended The Leo Marchutz School of Painting and Drawing in Aix. In the 1980’s and 90’s, Jill was one of the rare artists to have a studio at the Château Noir, where Cézanne had his studio in the late 19th century. Jill has exhibited in solo shows in New York City, Greenwich, Atlanta, Chicago, Washington DC, Dallas, and San Francisco, among other major American cities, as well as in Aix-en-Provence and Paris. Her work is part of the permanent collections of several museums and important private collections in America and in France. Jill appeared on “Good Morning America” and served as the Cézanne specialist for the Smithsonian Institute for the 100th anniversary of the painter’s death. A feature article on Jill’s exceptional journey as an artist appeared in the April-May 2017 edition of International Artist Magazine. Art, Soul & Destiny, Jill’s book, is currently in its second printing.

Improvisational Music and Dance Therapy Program
1 – 3pm
Self-expression is inherent in everyone, and the core self emerges through creativity. Join us and find your voice through the arts!
Karen Nisenson, Founder/Clinical Director, Arts for Healing, developed the integrated arts therapies methodology to expand self-awareness, self-expression and connection with others. In Silvermine’s auditorium, Karen (MM, Piano Performance, Julliard; MA, Music Therapy, NYU) will improvise piano playing with volunteers from the audience, an interactive experience that reflects personality through sound. No experience with music is need to join Karen at the keyboard!
As images from the exhibition are projected, Jennifer Ellyson, Dance Therapist, Arts for Healing, will mirror volunteers’ movements to express feelings that create non-verbal self-portraits. Jennifer (MA, Dance/Movement Therapy and Counseling, Columbia College, Chicago) will reveal how the body’s rhythmic choices relate to color, form and movement, giving new “voice” to the artist’s intent. The focus is not on the pictures, sound, or movement, but instead on the mental states revealed through the creative process.
Panel Discussion “The Art of Healing through the Arts”
3:30 – 4:30pm
Following the Improvisational program, Karen Nisenson and Jennifer Ellyson, as well as Ellen Brezovsky, Executive Director, New Canaan CARES, and Kathleen (Katie) Wieting, Art Therapist, Silver Hill Hospital will discuss the healing power of art. Ellen (MS, Social Work, Columbia) leads one of New Canaan’s foremost social service agencies and is a clinical social worker who provides addiction prevention education for families. Katie (ATR-BC, LCAT) oversees art therapy at Silver Hill Hospital for the Adolescent Transitional Living Program, and collaborates with Silvermine in classes to help teens overcome pain and find their inner artist. The esteemed panelists will share their expertise and experience, and respond to your questions.

This lecture is designed for beginners who are interested in developing an appreciation for modern art. This discussion will cover the artists and movements that shaped art in the middle of the 20th century. From Abstract Expressionism to Pop Art, this class will explore the major issues and essential artists that defined Modern Art. This is an open presentation that will encourage questions and group discussion. This is ideal for anyone looking to establish a basic understanding of what modern art is, how to appreciate it, and why we still care about it today. This lecture can be taken individually, or as a sequence.

We all don’t see the same way . We don’t see the same things. Visual thinking varies. Making and seeing art depends upon how our own vision works. What do we expect to see? How do we find meaning? How do make meaning from the patterns of our experience?
David Dunlop’s reputation as a painter who combines artistic skill, knowledge and enthusiasm prompted the Metropolitan Museum of Art to invite him to lecture on 4000 years of landscape painting in 2005. He has been a visiting artist/lecturer at multiple institutions. His PBS program on Cezanne was included in the exhibit Cezanne and American Modernism at the Montclair Art Museum.

It can be daunting once you and your teen realize how much needs to be done to apply for a fine arts university degree program. In this informational session a variety of programs and expectations will be explored to suit the many different types of high school students. This workshop will answer many of the questions parents and students ask: When do I look at schools? When do I apply? Do I already have a portfolio? What do I need? How do I get what I need? What can I major in? Do I need to write essays? What is the difference between a BA or BFA art program in a liberal arts school and a BFA program at a fine art school from a content standpoint? If time allows, the instructor will do short, preliminary portfolio reviews after presenting the options. Come with notebook, portfolio and your questions!

Dear Silvermine Community,
With the growing prevalence of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Connecticut and the recent public school closings in New Canaan and surrounding towns, we have made the difficult decision to temporarily close the Arts Center to the public until further notice.
While there are no cases of the coronavirus connected to Silvermine, we believe that public health and safety are top priorities, which is why we are taking this preventative measure.
The School of Art has concluded its winter session and we anticipate opening on May 4th for the start of the spring semester – or sooner, if appropriate based upon state and local guidance. Registration opens for spring courses and workshops on March 25, online and by phone only. We will not be accepting in-person registrations at this time. Should you have questions please contact the school offices at 203.966.9700 x2 or school@silvermineart.org.
The coronavirus outbreak is a unique situation for the entire country and we will continue to monitor the situation very closely. We regret the inconvenience and will continue to post updates regarding our exhibitions and classes on our website and social media platforms.
We look forward to opening as soon as possible.
Best regards,
Barbara Linarducci
