Significance of Seeds and Animal Habitats: An Earthplace and Silvermine Collaboration
Outreach
April 25, 2025

Silvermine Arts Center’s Art Partners Outreach Program and Earthplace Nature Discovery Center have continued to bring exciting interdisciplinary learning experiences to students in Bridgeport, CT schools. These innovative programs combine science, nature exploration and visual art, allowing students to creatively express their understanding of local ecosystems and the importance of environmental conservation.

Students participate in hands-on science investigations at Earthplace, exploring the native plants and animals of Connecticut’s wetlands and woodlands. They examine field samples, study wildlife habitats, and learn how ecosystems function and sustain life. Inspired by their fieldwork, students then work with Silvermine Teaching Artists to translate their observations into visual art, creating vibrant, mixed-media pieces that reflected the beauty and complexity of the natural world.

“Combining science and art is powerful stuff,” said Veronica Swain, Director of Nature Education and Conservation at Earthplace. “When students observe and interpret the natural world through creative expression, they deepen their understanding of both science and their own connection to it.”

The front gallery at Earthplace Nature Center bursts with color and texture as the nature center showcases the dynamic student art through the month of May. The result of the creative partnership with Silvermine, the exhibit features artwork from their “Animal Habitats” and “Significance of Seeds” programs, capturing the beauty and diversity of the natural world through the eyes of young artists. Showcasing art by the 2nd and 4th graders at both Dunbar and Wilbur Cross schools, the display invites the public to experience the beauty and the creative interpretations while highlighting the value of combining scientific exploration with artistic expression.

“Collaborating with Earthplace allows us to inspire students to see the environment through a creative lens,” said Missy Savard, Coordinator of Outreach for Silvermine Arts Center. “By connecting science and art, we encourage young learners to think critically, express themselves, and develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world.”

The Silvermine-Earthplace partnership exemplifies the powerful impact of interdisciplinary education, bringing STEM learning to STEAM while sparking curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong appreciation for nature.
