NEW CANAAN, CT, April 18, 2023—Silvermine Arts Center presents Narrations, on view April 29 through May 18 with an opening reception on Saturday, April 29, 2–4 p.m. This exhibition explores new directions in figurative and narrative themes in painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, and textiles. It features selected work by 49 of the Silvermine Guild’s more than 300 professional artists nationwide.

Nina Buxenbaum creates depictions of women, particularly women of color, as a means to provide an alternative to the stereotypes prevalent in our culture. Scott Bricher’s lush paintings revel in the sensuality of observation and the exploration of subconscious themes with enigmatic narratives. The simplicity of a Susan Stillman subject is transformed by the moment of illumination and its unexpected spatial abundance. In Narrations, portraits are deconstructed, reframed, or reimagined. Figures inspired by folk art, ancient art, medieval art, or even cinema, bring an immediacy or a rethinking of material and form. Streetscapes and landscapes reveal a sublime desolation or intensity of color. There are contemporary Madonnas, delightfully sensuous animals, and elements of the human figure in compositions that conjure emotion.

Narrations is an exhibition to lose yourself in. Viewers will be presented at every turn with ravishing scenes, haunting displacements, and everyday splendor.
