From the 76th A•ONE exhibition at Silvermine: Jennifer Toby, Before Here; Ruth Sack, Mother and Child; Sherie Klein, Tear Drop Touchdown
NEW CANAAN, CT, Sept. 11, 2026—The A•ONE, Silvermine’s signature exhibition, highlights the diversity of work that is currently being made by established and emerging artists. Now in its 76th year, it draws from an international community of sculptors, painters, printmakers, photographers, and mixed-media artists. Silvermine is honored to collaborate this year with Robert Manley of Phillips, the renowned auction house. He joins a long line of preeminent jurors who have brought their passion and expertise to Silvermine. The 76thA•ONE runs from Sept. 5 through Oct. 22. The public is invited to the opening reception at Silvermine Galleries on Sat., Sept. 19, from 4 to 6 p.m.
The exhibition as a whole is a paradise of painterly compositions, vibrant sculpture, and stunning examples of the photographer’s art. Innovative encaustic, pen and ink, and textile work contribute to this year’s wide range of disciplines and materials. The top award, the Board Chairs Grand Prize, went to Jennifer Toby of Catherines, CA. Robert Manley writes, “Toby’s magical, suggestive paintings occupy that elusive territory between figuration and abstraction. Throughout her work, she demonstrates an unerring ability to bring a dizzying array of colors, forms and textures into an unexpected and fascinating balance.” Other award winners include Brigid Kennedy of Wethersfield, CT and Lou Peterson of Los Angeles, CA, who won the Patricia Warfield Jinishian Figurative Awards; Ruth Sack of Cheshire, CT, who received the Mollie & Albert Jacobson Sculpture Award; and Richard Wollman of Amesbury, MA, who was the recipient of the Carol Eisner Sculpture Award.
In his comments on the A•ONE exhibition, Manley cites Silvermine as “one of those vital, somewhat unsung institutions that constitutes the heart and soul of the art world.” He writes, “some of the giants of the past century have crossed its path, among them Milton Avery, Elaine de Kooning, Alexander Calder, Henry Moore, and Diego Giacometti…Silvermine feels, for lack of a better word, authentic—and authentic in all the ways that matter.”
Robert Manley joined Phillips Auction house in 2015, after 16 years as a modern and contemporary art specialist at Christie’s. Before joining the auction world, Robert worked at a number of top galleries in New York City, including Joan Washburn Gallery. He received his undergraduate and master’s degrees in art history at Rutgers and City University of New York.
Established in 1949 as the New England Exhibition, a regional showcase, Silvermine’s signature exhibition later became known as Art of the Northeast and is now A•ONE, an international exhibition. Throughout its history, the annual exhibition has featured the work of many prominent artists, and its jurors have included major critics, curators, and directors from influential art institutions.
