NORWALK, CT, June 5, 2026—Applause, proud smiles, and a sense of accomplishment filled the South Norwalk Public Library on May 21 as twenty-one student artists from the Norwalk Housing Authority Learning Centers were officially celebrated as published authors. The occasion marked the debut of Autumn Light, a beautifully crafted book created through Silvermine Arts Center’s Art Partners Outreach Education Program.

The evening brought together students, families, friends, and community members for a book dedication ceremony to honor months of creativity, collaboration, and exploration. For many of the young participants, this moment represented more than an exhibition; it was the realization of their voices and visions captured in print.

As part of the ceremony, the South Norwalk Public Library formally accepted Autumn Light into its permanent collection, ensuring that the work of these young local authors will be preserved and shared with the broader community for years to come. The milestone underscores the power of arts education to elevate student voices and create lasting connections beyond the classroom. The book features thoughtful, mixed media illustrations alongside original prose, offering a rich exploration of both visual arts and literacy. Each page reflects the students’ unique perspectives, capturing moments of observation, imagination, and personal expression.

“This project is about much more than making art. It is about giving students the opportunity to see themselves as creators, storytellers, and contributors to their community,” said Missy Savard, Coordinator of Outreach at Silvermine Arts Center. “Watching them hold their published book while celebrating alongside their families and friends is incredibly meaningful.”

Over the course of eight autumn evenings at Silvermine, students engaged in an immersive artistic journey, observing the natural world around Guthrie’s Pond and translating their experiences into vibrant works of art and writing. Inspired in part by the outdoor practices of van Gogh, students experimented with a range of materials and techniques, capturing fleeting light, changing skies, and the quiet beauty of the season.

The celebration of student achievement continues on the campus of the Silvermine Arts Center with a formal art reception and exhibition showcasing the original works featured in the book. The exhibition offers visitors the opportunity to experience the students’ expressive range. The exhibition will remain on view through the end of July.

The two celebrations honor the young artists whose curiosity, imagination, and perseverance transformed a series of evenings into a lasting work of art. As copies of Autumn Light find their place on library shelves and their artwork fills gallery walls, these students now share something remarkable with their community: not just a book, but a story of creativity, collaboration, and the power of being seen.
